Abolish Homework!

I truly do think homework, except in special cases, should be abolished. Here are some links I found for those interested, but I'll give my reasons:

  • Kids need time to relax and digest what they've learned, engage in reading and play and other activities for their own pleasure, and spend time with their families.

Homework is 5-10 study hours a week that the districts--and therefore the taxpayers--don't have to pay teachers for. That's why it exists.

Given the current political mood re taxes and public schooling, unfortunately, I don't see homework going away any time soon.

I'm not that cynical about it. I think people really believe that children ought to have homework every night, to teach them some sort of work ethic, I guess.

Truancy laws? Great. Now, I'm going to have to sue the state in order to take E out of school for a break? That stinks! Seriously, I am of the opinion Parent's should MAKE their child skip school at least once a quarter. How else are kids to learn about things like Civil Disobedience and doing the RIGHT thing versus following the crowd, not to mention the ills of workaholism. The American Work Ethic is great but take a look a Japan if you want to see The American Work Ethic gone seriously wrong. In addition to some of their kids killing themselves over academic stress, they've had to LIMIT the number of hours employee's can work... apparently they have a rather high number of employee's drop dead at work after working as much as 75 to 80 hours a week.

I know a lot of moms who allow their kids one day for a "mental health break" per reporting period or semester ( ... )
