The problem is the manner in which people have been reared against the cliche. Not to be overused, I agree, but it exists for a reason, doesn't it? The meaninglessness and weakness, the poor phrasing, and the stale language make cliche terrible to use.
As for the rest, only this: the past is never to be revered.
Turning your back on what you are may not be a bad idea, depending on what you are.
