When cyberspace was a niche and there wasn't a google, baring your soul online wasn't such an issue. Now things are different. Things are different. Google may not always be your friend, ask Rick Santorium. Have a public channel but definately have filters for your various parts of your life. think in layers. BTW a public feed lets non lj users follow without having an lj account.
Also think about what device you will use most. Tablet, Notebook, Phone? What clients for what online service are available on your chosen platform. I'm partial to online systems that use open standards myself. And these days it is usually easy to cross pollinate. Example I'm not on twitter but beckiesuedalton has linked her lj to her twitter.
Anf if LJ or some system doesn't fit your needs putting up your own CMS is relatively easy.
I can't keep my own company's website running. Creating my own CMS is beyond me.
I here you...there was a time I public posted everything. I'm not there anymore. I've paid my $20 and done the mass edit to turn all my past entries private.
I've set up tags for new entries, so I can have a better way to keep up.
Simply put, I have a lot going on, and Facebook is ... well too public. I don't want to exclude my friends from my life, but I also don't want to force them to read something that could get really long.
