All he could think was I'm too old fer this.

Closer to forty than not.

Mercs didn't have a long shelf life. Start slowing up; get taken down.

In his lap, a small but deadly version from the other end of the spectrum cried.

Barely in her twenties. Last thing she needed was to be tied down. Tied to him.

They weren't cut out fer this.

He was brash and rowdy and drank too much.

She was loopy and emotional and still couldn't eat an ice planet.

Hell, they acted like kids themselves more'n not.

How were they gonna raise one?

Fresh tears slid down River's face and Jayne didn't know if she was upset over the thing in her belly or his thoughts in general but he wiped her tears away anyway.

There went his life. And hers.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Giggles and shrieks fill the room as little feet try their best to run away from him.

But he's bigger and faster and she wants to be caught anyway.

Jayne tosses her in the air, catches her, and blows raspberries on her neck.

She begs him to 'Top! 'Top, Papa! and when he does, she grins and orders, 'Gin!

This goes on until a head pokes out of a certain someones room. River smiles softly, even while a single brow arches, and he thinks again how gorram pretty she is. He knows he's been caught when her smile grows at the thought so he plants a kiss on her carbon copy, sets her on the ground, and pats her butt in the right direction.

She toddles to her mama in her footie pajamas, clinging Grrr in one arm, and turning to wave Nite-nite to him with the other.

Watching River pick up their little girl, hold her close, and hum that ol' lullaby, Jayne can't help but smile.

There goes his life. His everything.

----------------------------------------------------

Her boots are on, a knife tucked away inside. She's got Boo at her hip and a small pack of essentials slung over one shoulder.

He already checked all her weapons with her last night. Twice. Made sure they was all shiny and clean.

She's good to go.

This pain he's never felt before curls up in his chest. Like to stay a good long while.

She just smiles, kisses his cheek, and hugs both him and her mama.

"Love you, Pa," she says. "I'll write soon as I can. And thank you."

There'd been a lot of yelling when she said she wanted to leave. Wanting to find her own way.

He weren't about to let her.

But she was stubborn.

Like him.

Before he knows it, she's walking away and all he can see is her curly mop of brown hair in the crowd.

He's so proud but he don't remember pride ever hurtin' this much afore.

There goes his life. His everything.

A tiny hand slides into his, a perfect fit against all odds.

"She gonna be ok?"

"She is smart and strong and supremely capable. Our progeny will excel."

"But yer gonna keep track of her til she picks a berth, right?"

"Naturally."

River steps in front of him, rests a hand over his heart before slowly bringing it to his cheek, and wipes away the tears falling inside his mind.
