John Wick (creator of Legend of the Five Rings, 7th Sea) designed a game to be an "Anti-Dnd". A game where it isn't an endless loop of killing things to take their stuff to be able to kill bigger things. This is not Conan's game, this is a game for Elric and Raistlin. It's a game of Operatic Tragedy.
There's been a movement in the gaming industry titled the "indy games", which has been trying to produce game system that assist in storytelling, not just a system to resolve combat. Houses of the Blooded, I think is the pinnacle of this movement, with the introduction of a unique and excellent system call privledge. Instead of the roll of the dice determining success and failure, the dice roll determine who has the privledge of narrating whether or not the action succeeds or fails, the player or the storyteller.
You should go check out John Wick's Design Blog over at www.housesoftheblooded.com Altogether an awesome game.

clickied poll. :) I'm a fan of Wick's games (as my current L5R addiction likely attests to) and indy games in general.

Looks fun.
