I borrowed a USB cage from a co-worker to see if I could suck the data off my laptop's hardrive. And it works - except for the My Documents directory - the one with all my data. Insert lots of cursing here

See if someone with a Linux / Unix machine can get the data for you. When my last desktop windows machine ate it, that was the only way I was able to salvage the data .
A friend sent me a Data recovery program - which appears to have worked. I got windows reinstalled yesterday & started loading files & preferences back on. My outlook file is definitely ok.
I'll put some data recovery software on my website. It can take 8-12 hours to run depending on the condition of the drive, but I've had pretty good success with it.
Key places to pull files from : My Documents X:\Documents and Settings\[username]\My Documents Desktop X:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Desktop Favorites IE X:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Favorites Firefox X:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\[arglebargle]\bookmarks.html E-Mail Outlook X:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Office\Outlook Outlook Express X:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\[foo]\Microsoft\Outlook Express
MY Documents folder is tricky because it's not necessarily where you expect it to be. Did you grab the Windows folder ? It has some long folder name c:/windows/blah/username/desktop/mydocuments/
something along those lines. When I had to copy from one drive to another I had to look around for it for a while before I found it.
Thanks sweetie. I don't want to jinx myself, but the data recover program tranceboy gave me, is running right now & seems to be working. I'll have a better idea in 18 more hours!
No stick! Tempting - but I want it to still work after! :)
And, so far, so good. The data recovery program appears to have worked & I have my laptop up & running again! My hard drive appears to still have some issues - so I should probably get a new one. I'm going to try & hold out til Christmas & just back up frequently between now & then!
