I tried a more forgiving pattern, http://knittykeen.blogspot.com,
and used larger needles to bind off and it fits!
This is for my daughter who has major dredlocks and so there has to be ample give. She likes bright orange for the visibility factor while riding her bike (which she does all winter long here in Mn.)
