Kira sat up, rubbing his head and curses Hisagi mentally for using his own shinten on him. The brunette had almost tackled Kira to the ground to find the small shinten the blonde had concealed in his uniform. When Kira had used the drug to subdue to 11th Division’s 5th seat, he was left with very little to spare, and unfortunately for Hisagi, the remaining shinten could not keep his friend out for long.
Kira bites his lip to see his friend up in the sky, and desperately wants to join him, but he knows his duty is to the ones injured here. He looks around at his fallen comrades and prays silently that Hisagi will not be joining them again any time soon.
“Kira-kun…?” Hinamori mutters weakly.
“Hinamori-kun, are you alright?” Kira asks quickly, rushing to her side.
She nods slowly and smiles. “Are you?”
He pauses, wondering why she would ask such a question to her healer but nods. “Yes, it was only a very small hit of shinten Hisagi-san used.” He tries to force a weak smile. “And between you and me, my body’s built a small defense system against those things now, after so long in the 4th Division I mean.”
She smiles and nods, the relief on her face showing. “Hisagi-san… will be alright, won’t he?”
Kira nods automatically, his body giving the response that would make Hinamori most comfortable before he can even register the question. “Of course he will be. He… just has something he has to do.”
“I know,” She says. “We both know.”
Kira nods slowly, his hands balling into fists on his lap and he forces himself not to look back into the sky, where the three traitorous Captains stood.
Hinamori grips Kira’s hand when she sees that he is shaking and Kira looks at her in surprise. He himself had not realized he was trembling, he tries to smile back as he lays his other hand on top of hers.
“Hinamori-kun…”
“We’ll all be ok,” She says. “Because we have you here.”
He nods with a soft smile.
They both understood the hidden message in Hinamori’s words. The three Vice Captains that had been betrayed, they had to believe that all three of them would be able to move on.
Because we have you here. She wasn’t trying to boost Kira’s confidence, she wasn’t assuring them of everyone’s safety, Hinamori was silently asking him not to rush off onto the battlefield like Hisagi had done.
“Oi blondie!”
Kira jumped and his hand instantly flew from Hinamori’s to his hilt when a white haired man appeared a short distance from them. His lips moving at a lightning speed and a barrier formed around Kira, and the wounded again, replacing the barrier that had fallen when Hisagi left.
“Cool it will ya?!” The man snaps. “Can you take care o’ her?”
He nods at his arm and Kira sees the unconscious young girl he is holding. Confusion writes over his face and he looks up at the man with drawn brows.
“I’m not ya enemy ‘kay?” He snaps again. “Look I’m trying to beat that hollow brat, you guys are too aren’t’cha?”
Kira, still silent stares at the man.
“Could ya stop staring and open your friggin’ barrier already?! I don’ have all day y’know!”
The 3rd Division Vice Captain stands up slowly, not breaking eye contact with the other man. He hears a soft whisper from Hinamori but throws a quick glance at her to assure her it’s ok. Laying a hand on the barrier wall Kira speaks.
“You know Hisagi-san, don’t you?” He asks.
The man looks shocked and he suddenly stares suspiciously at Kira and glances quickly at the wounded.
“Who the hell are ya kid?”
“Vice Captain of the 3rd Division, Kira Izuru.” He replies automatically.
The frown doesn’t soften as the man is sure he hasn’t heard the name before, and then what the blonde had said a moment ago clicks.
“Hisagi Shuuhei…” He mutters.
Kira nods. “Hisagi-san once told me of a strong, white haired man that was Captain of the 9th Division a long time ago. That large man that you came with,” Kira looks quickly at where Captain Soi fon is, and the Vizard with her. “He use to be in the Kidou Corps, one century ago he and several others disappeared from Soul Society. I can sort of fill in the gaps myself.”
Kira Izuru hadn’t been at the top of his Academy class for nothing, he knew the history of the Gotei 13. At one stage he had even considered joining the kidou corps, and he had read enough history books to have heard of the incident 100 years ago. And if this man had truly been in the Gotei 13, if he was the one Hisagi had told Kira about, if he was here to beat Aizen, then Kira could trust him.
“You know your stuff,” The man nods, undoubtedly impressed. “Name’s Muguruma Kensei.”
Accepting Kensei’s self-introduction as a sign of mutual trust, Kira opened a door way in the barrier opens and stepped out to take the wounded girl from Kensei’s arms. He takes her inside the barrier, laying her down by the others before closing the barrier again.
“You know Shuuhei well then?” Kensei asks, turning around to go back into battle.
“Hisagi-san… is a dear friend.” Kira says with slight hesitation. The reality of how much Kira cared for his comrades hit him hard, he was a warrior, but his personal emotions were taking over him now that death was staring them all in the face. For some reason this man’s casual use of his friend’s first name bugged something inside the blonde.
“Good to know the kid picked up some smart friends then,” Kensei says.
“Muguruma-san!” Kira calls out before Kensei leaves.
He turns around and faces Kira.
“Hisagi-san told me, you saved him when he was a child.”
Kensei stares blankly for a moment but then nods.
“Please… please save him… one more time.” Kira mutters, looking down, pretending to analyse the green haired girl’s wounds.
“I’ve got a thing or two to say to Tousen myself,” Kensei punches a fist into his palm. “So don’t worry.”
Kira shut his eyes tight. That’s not what he meant. Not exactly. Kira wanted Kensei to save Hisagi from himself, Hisagi needed someone to look up to that wasn’t Tousen, he needed someone else to go to for guidance. He needed to move on from Tousen.
Since his fight with Abirama Kira had done nothing but heal and watch over the wounded. While he knew this was just as important as fighting on the front lines, he couldn’t help but feel useless, sitting here and watching everyone else fight. And lose. The guilt of sitting inside of this barrier, or having let Hisagi run back onto the battlefield, was enough to eat Kira alive.
“Hey,” Kensei said, causing Kira to look up at him. “I’ll take care of him.”
The softness in Kensei’s voice hit something inside Kira, something familiar. It was the same sort of reassurance Hisagi had always given the young blonde. When they were sempai and kohai in the Academy, when Hisagi was a seated officer and Kira a new squad member, when Hisagi first reached Vice Captain and Kira was seated. That reassurance told Kira that Kensei knew what Kira had been really asking, it told Kira that this man cared about Hisagi. It told Kira, that this man, would protect Hisagi with his life.
“Thank you.” Kira says softly, unable to bring his voice any louder as the relief sweeps over him.
“And you better take care of her!” Kensei yells as he disappears.
Immediately, Kira concentrates what energy he has left to save Kensei’s friend.
“It’s going to be alright.” Kira whispers to the girl, to Hinamori, and to himself.
