My first tutorial: Uneven/Jagged text

Aug 27, 2005 17:47

This Tutorial is made in Photoshop 7, but I think it can be also work in PSP too.

How to make text like this:

Step 01: Preparing your base - Crop your image to the desired size and placement and prep it (sharpen/brighten/darken,etc.) until you're satisfied

Step 02: Put on text - I used white text in Courier New at 14 pt and tracking at 100 pt (so it's easier to move each letter). You can also use fonts like Book Antiqua or Garamond or 18th Century.

Step 03: I think the text is too light so I decided to duplicate the text layer to make it stand out more, link the two text layers, and go to Layer > Merge Linked. Now your text layer should be rasterized.

Step 04: Go to Edit > Free Transform and tilt your text a little bit.

Step 05: Zoom in to about 400% and select your Magic Wand tool. Using your magic wand, select the second letter so it looks like THIS. You can also select the first letter first if you'd like, but since the text is already slanted, I think just doing the other letters are sufficent.

Step 06: Now that the second letter is selected, select your Move tool (Shift+V). Click on the second letter and drag it down and closer to the first letter. And make sure you are clicking inside of the "moving ants" (on the selected letter), NOT on the picture, or you will drag the entire word.

Step 07: Now repeat steps 5 and 6 for all the other letters. So, select the third letter with your magic wand, drag it to where you'd like it with your move tool.

Step 08: You can add another line of text or just stop there. I'm going to add another word by repeating steps 2 through 6.

Step 09: I don't like where the words are so I rearrange them a little bit. If you would like to make the word(s) bigger, you can just use Free Transform it. :)

Step 10: I think the words are light again, so I tried sharpening them (each layer with text on them), see? But now they stand too much, so I undid what I did and duplicated the layers with text on them. Looks better!

Step 11: The icon looks a little plain, so I took a round 1 px brush and tried to draw a nice scribble. (It's harder than it looks! xD) I was satisfied on my millionth attempt. ;) Oh yes, and then I sharpened the scribble. So here's the final result:

You can definitely do much more to this icon, but I like to keep things pretty simple.

I hope that was understandable, and that it is the easiest way to do it. I'd feel bad if there was way to make this kind of text in 3 steps. :/ But, if you do know of a shorter way, I'd love to know! Also, if you have any questions, need me to clarify anything, feel free to ask. And I'd love to see how it turns out for you!
