Sanctuary: double standards

Oct 30, 2011 11:36

By this I don't mean double standards for men and women, I mean double standards for "good guys" and "bad guys or those with ambiguous allegiance". Namely, there's a standard for what Will is allowed to get away with, and what Nikola or John, for example, are allowed to get away with, without getting crucified by fandom.

cut for discussion of Monsoon, with mention of an unconfirmed spoiler for next week's episode with Tesla--said spoiler is at the end of the post )

is it possible that there's not much Will love because he is just human and not an abnormal?

Possibly.

I think that might irk some people who think of him as just an annoying sidekick.

To each their own. But it's a double standard to say the sidekick can never do anything wrong, but it's okay for the evil genius to be evil and we can just pat him on the head.

when Kate was first introduced, there were also many "haters" popping out.

I was kind of a hater at first, because Kate just grated on me. And then as the show went along and we saw more of her and learned more about her and she built friendships with Magnus-Will-Henry-Declan-Biggie, she really grew on me. I like when characters win me over like Kate has.

Which really? No love for Abby from me.Me either. I don't hate her. I kind of did in Wingman/One Night, but in this episode she was much better written. (She got to do more actiony stuff, which she didn't do late last season because the actress was pregnant and they were working around it, and be more competent.) I just ( ... )

Maybe like Cops&Robbers? Or more like a hunter vs. wild life preserver:-) Yeah, it's definitely not good for a relationship.

Yeah the hunter/wildlife preservationist is a good comparison. I feel like it's going to break them up for good eventually and I'm okay with that, because it's breaking up for a reason that's not "it's not you, it's me" or cheating or something like that which always makes me uncomfortable.

*bows* I have rarely felt the need to defend a character as much and as loudly as I feel like defending Will.

I love when people defend Will, it makes me happy. He really hasn't done anything to warrant the amount of stick he gets from this fandom.

Also rather interesting to me is how one of the arguments used against Helen/Will fans is that Will is too young for Magnus... Charlotte doesn't seem any older. But that is one whole other debate I do not wanna get involved in at all.

I think the thing that squicks people is that she saved him when he was eight. But my response is "is he eight anymore? no? okay."

I mean, does he look eight to you? Only if you're gauging hotness on a scale of one to ten, I imagine he could be eight. ;)

You probably already know how much I love and adore Tesla, no matter what he has done and probably regardless of what he will do, but I also love Will. And I've been avoiding...well, everywhere b/c of comments made toward/about him for this.

It's ridiculous, and makes me rather pissy. So I just wanted to drop by and say thank you for posting this before I go vanish again.

Will gets Abby's partner in hives instead of killed or disabled, and he's an asshole. I wonder what would have been the reaction had he just let the guy get killed by the steno on a sugar high, or let them just kill the steno and take it in. Those are more assholish things, to me, and not only assholish but would be completely failing to do his job. I think he made the best of being backed into a shitty corner, myself.

I've been trying to sit on my feelings about this, but when I saw people calling him an asshole and a jerk for trying to protect Abby AND the abnormal AND get his job done, I just lost it.
