Prologue

I stared quizzically at the words before me.  The floating white text prompted me to begin my journey into the world of Elderyn.  Looking around, I found myself suspended in a sea of darkness.

Turning back towards the text, I hastily clicked the create button that appeared before me.

The button fizzled into nothingness and in its place, a mirror emerged.  Looking deep into the mirror, I saw the reflection of a young man with soft chestnut-brown coloured hair and a smile that beamed from ear to ear.  An intense emerald hue stained his eyes; a glint of excitement reflecting from them.  He briefly motioned his body back and forth as if he was waiting for the timely arrival of someone, perhaps a companion of his.   It was then that I noticed that a myriad of options had appeared before me.

This must be at the creation screen.  I quickly scanned through the list, noticing numerous choices like hair color or body type.  There were so many options!  My head was spinning from how detailed the customization process was.  I decided to start from the top and work my way down starting with the male or female option.

I had determined beforehand that I was going to play as my own gender so I switched the check next to male over to female.  I giggled at the idea of trying out a man’s body.  The notion of playing as a boy amused me to some extent, but ultimately, I believe I would feel more comfortable playing as myself on my first run.  Perhaps I’d create an alternate character later on once I get a better feel for this game.

Time flew by before I realized that I must have spent hours on the creation of my character.  My avatar was now a reflection of myself:  long golden-blonde hair with a cozy summer tone, twinkling blue sapphire eyes that sparked with curiosity, and a soft succinct smile which seemed to belie a greater sense of excitement.

The last detail before I could begin playing was to decide on a unique user handle.  I groaned inwardly.  I was terrible when it came to naming things.  Unable to come up with anything that appealed to me, I entered my first name into the name field.

I wasn’t surprised that my name was already used, but I still frowned nevertheless.  By now, my anticipation was palpable; I grew impatient and swiftly typed my last name in.  My submission was accepted without objection; I was finally finished with customizing my character!

Satisfied with the results, I clicked Enter World at the bottom of the character creation menu.  The black void that surrounded me suddenly evaporated as a bright white light flashed before my eyes, nearly blinding me in its sudden abruptness.

Following a brief bit of hesitation, I opened my eyes to the wondrous sight before me.  I was in the middle of what I determined to be a fairly sizable town which seemed to burst with life at every corner.  After slowly taking in my surroundings, I knew that my adventure was about to truly begin.
