So today my dad sent me a link to this New York Times article with the message: "Abby, After your sublet. -Dad". When I realized it was about no-boys-allowed housing in New York City, my first response was, "Oh, ha ha, Dad. It's funny because I like boys a lot." But then I kept reading and I got to this part (emphasis mine):

I love that part of California. A couple months ago we went to Santa Cruz and, on the way home, drove the coast road up through San Francisco before heading east to get home. It was beautiful! Mike wanted to kick himself though for not taking his camera.

Oh my god, please live there so I can see the "beau parlor" for myself. ...heck, Gretchen and I should live there. It would be awesome. We could recreate scenes from Thoroughly Modern Millie and O. Henry all the time.

Hah, I'd totally live there! It'd be like living at my all-girls boarding school again, but minus a whole bunch of rules. :) Too bad finding a job in the city = difficult.

Heehee - my school still had "beau parlors". We called them "date parlors" (which seemed normal at the time but in retrospect is actually antiquated and adorable). We often lamented their lack of doors but never realized the full reason behind them - we just thought they were dumb rooms without doors. They were "converted" into TV lounges, which by the school's reckoning meant putting TVs in but not bothering to update the victorian-style furniture and fussy, floor-length curtains. I never entertained a male guest there, in fact, I remember sleeping there one night when my roommate had a male guest who got exceedingly drunk - he scared my roommate and I so we camped out down there, afraid to tell the RA because we didn't want to get in trouble for having a guy there overnight.
