Any time I hear the Golden Rule mentioned, I'm reminded of a bit from Richard Bach's Illusions In this scene, Richard is answering a hypothetical question about the Golden Rule, posed to him by the messiah, Don Shimoda:

"The Golden Rule doesn't work. How would you like to meet a masochist who did unto others as he would have them do unto him? Or a worshiper of the Crocodile God, who craves the honor of being thrown alive into the pit?
