I'm so, so sorry. What an awful way to have your quest come to an end -- the decision to stop pursuing it taken away from you so abruptly.

(You may know from FB that I have two friends who adopted little girls in the past year -- not babies, elementary school age children, one in the US and one in Canada. It's been a different set of challenges than waiting for an infant, but they're very happy. Tell me if you ever want an introduction to either of them.)
