Work stuff

Designing a database is HARD. The last time I built one from scratch was back in the late 1990s, for my dissertation research, and it was non-relational and with a different program. Now I'm using Access 2016, setting up lots of relationships and forms and bells and whistles. But slowly I'm getting there. Useful skills, whether or not I ever write ( Read more... )

Your work sounds interesting. I program for a lab using Access and SQL Server. I've got 8 databases, 3 of which have been converted from Access to SQL Server. I'm trying to convert a 4th this weekend. The front end code will stay in Access for now, simply because I don't have the time to rewrite it in Visual Basic.

I love Access - it's extremely powerful for a 'personal' database. SQL Server is more dependable, but way harder to work with.

Good luck! Sorry I missed your prompt post - too much RL work these days!

Oh, I'll still take prompts if you want to leave one. :)

This database is just for a personal research project, in which I'm looking at about 30 years' worth of job ads in my field (library) as published in a particular professional journal. Which is good, because it means if I screw something up it's not going to hurt what someone else needs to do!

Thank you for writing The Admittance Series with cruisedirector. I know it's kind of a WIP, but I was always wondering if I interpreted it correctly: Did Lucius Malfoy tell Snape to seduce Harry, so that Harry and Draco would break up and Snape and Harry end up together, so that Draco could marry and produce and heir? And to this end, the broomstick he gave to Snape was to be a bribe, of sorts, for Harry? (I don't really care if the story remains a WIP, it's great as it is, no regrets, plus I don't look forward to reading HP/DM/SS where I really want only two of those three and have nothing against Lucius Malfoy's plan, because, coming from the opposite direction, we have the same wish. :D
