Hee! Well, you can opt out of the essay section and save fifteen dollars, but I just went ahead and took it. Pointless, I'd already missed the application deadlines for all the colleges snobby enough to demand essay scores, but, you know, there wasn't really any reason not to take it.
The same thing happened to me on the SAT. The first time I got a nine out of twelve; the second time I got a ten. I wrote about the categorical imperative and I got a ten. It was really stupid. And like you said, I have no idea what they think I did wrong. I've heard they grade you based on how long your essay is, and I have small handwriting, so there's no chance I would ever fill both pages in 25 minutes, even if I made it larger than I usually do.
On the other hand, I got all the grammar and stylistics questions right, so I still got an 800 on the writing section the second time I took it, even with the ten on the essay.
See, my handwriting is big, and I /did/ fill at least two pages . . . XD And, a nine. A /nine/. I've combed the rubric, and honestly, I cannot figure out what they took issue with.
Yeah, it's really stupid. Like, I'm 99th percentile for my English multiple choice/essay score combined, but only 88th for my essay alone. (unsurprisingly, I tend to be very grateful for multiple choice.
No, I actually really enjoy taking multiple choice tests. I get all excited about them.
That... yeah, it sucks; but it does happen sometimes, to all of us. Like me; I got 51% on my most recent exam. My average is up around 65. Difference is, I knew when I came out that I'd gotten a low mark.
