Not many months passed until chaos reached them. Jack found himself at the mercy of Gray, his own brother, willing to make him suffer as much as he possibly could.
He was determined in hurting Jack the best way he could and that obviously implied hurting the people and things he loved.
At the end of the day, Jack was feeling rather thankful Ianto had been so calm regarding their legal partnership dilemma after Gwen pointed it out to them, because if Gray had known, he would have aimed for Ianto without any second thought and Jack wasn´t sure he would have been able to be there to bring him back to life if that would have happened.
Gray had his own time vortex manipulator, he could have taken Ianto anywhere in the universe; past, future, any other world... he could have tortured him and watched him die without the slightest sign of remorse.
Resting his head in both his hands Jack took in a deep breath and his eyes drifted to the medical bay where he had put Gray´s body to rest; frozen perhaps for eternity because he knew his brother to have no cure.
There was no cure for madness now, there never would be...
The Captain looked up when hearing the soft sound of something being placed on his desk and smiled softly to himself, whilst the pleasurable aroma of recently brewed coffee reached his nose.
He noticed Ianto had gone back to wearing the titanium band as Jack had himself. For that dreadful day they had been in such a hurry both rings had been forgotten in the bathroom. Luck had apparently been on their side, when it came to that.
Looking up, Jack met Ianto´s tired eyes and reached his hand over to squeeze his lover´s, “Is there something that needs to be done?” He asked because he had helped Ianto pack things from Owen´s and Tosh´s apartments, but still, Jack was sure they were forgetting something.
Gwen was a walking wreck since it happened, so even though she had helped around the Hub, Jack had considered it best she took some time off as himself and Ianto took care of Tosh and Owen´s personal belongings.
“It’s all done.”
Ianto´s words were blank, emotionless and Jack nodded his head once as he sat back on his chair cradling the mug between the fingers of his hands.
“Do you think Gwen will cope?”
“It’s difficult to say, but I like to think she will,” Jack thought out loud, “If she doesn´t, then I’m not sure what would happen to Torchwood three,” He admitted and took a sip of the steamy infusion.
“What do you mean?”
“We won´t stay here forever, we can´t. They,” Jack paused himself, because it wasn´t ‘they’ anymore, ‘they’ had only one team member left alive, “Gwen knows I don’t age, but she doesn´t know about you, she can´t know about you. A couple years from now... we’ll have to leave all this behind,” Jack looked at Ianto in the eyes.
“I did think of that, but I have no idea where we could go, that they won’t find us, unless your friend gives us a lift to some other planet or galaxy.”
“That was exactly what I was thinking,” Jack admitted to see the other´s reaction. He could see the Welshman was trying to digest the idea as Jack kept on telling him the rest, “I thought we could re-build Torchwood, gather new team members, and once we’re sure they’ll cope on their own, we could leave.”
“But, will you be able to leave Jack? Just like that? You´ve been working for Torchwood since…”
“I have a reason to want to move on now,” Jack said quietly, interrupting, and squeezed Ianto´s thigh for the other was resting against the edge of his desk, “I was thinking, maybe I could convince the Doctor to take us somewhere where I could find a nice Spaceship, we could travel, I could show you that the rest of the universe is not how we usually get to see it here,” He smiled softly, “It’s not all bad.”
“I know that.”
“One thing is knowing, another one is seeing,” Jack offered with a smile and sighed softly, “But yes, I thought that would be something nice for us to do. Would you like that?” He asked curious as to what Ianto would like to do with his now extended life span.
“You know I would, I’ll just be torn when the moment comes. Leaving all this behind, Torchwood is really, all I know. Torchwood, and you.”
“There are other ways of helping Ianto. Torchwood is not the only way one has to help earth, or to stop some injustices from happening.”
Getting up from his chair, Jack wrapped his arms around Ianto´s body and held him close as the other did the same. Resting his chin on Ianto´s shoulder Jack snuggled up as close as he could manage and took in a deep breath, taking in the scent of Ianto´s perfume mingled with the natural smell of his skin, “We’ll move on and we’ll be fine. These things happen and we have to find a way to move forwards,” He whispered against Ianto´s ear, whilst feeling the hold around his waist tightening, so Jack rubbed his hand against Ianto´s back, “I promise the pain will be bearable. Until it becomes a distant sad memory,” He promised.
“I know it will, it happened with Lisa. It is the present time though. We have to deal with it now... the idea of getting new team members, which we will be needing all too soon, watching some other people using their work stations...”
“I know,” Jack said and pulled back to look at Ianto. “I thought to make things a little bit easier on everyone, I could ask UNIT to lend us Martha until we are ready to find someone else.”
“That would be a good idea. She’s very clever, we know her, we worked well with her... it could work and it would gain us a little bit of time.”
“Yes, I think it will,” Jack sighed softly, “Regarding Tosh´s position, I thought you could take over,” He said looking at his lover in the eyes.
“Jack, I’m not near as half as smart as to what she was.”
“You’re not her. You think differently. But I´ve seen you hacking into systems. I think in the mean time you could manage with that. Do you think you could try it out?”
“I could. I just, I can’t promise any outstanding results.”
“You know more than you think you do Ianto, I´ve seen you working with Tosh, you were one of the few who kept up with her. You learnt a lot all those times you just sat with her, reading equations and stuff, you helped Owen and the rest open the rift, you’ll do fine.”
“I’ll try.”
Jack smiled softly and pressed a kiss to Ianto´s brow. “I know you will. So, those were the things I thought about, anything else that comes to mind?”
“Not really, not at the moment at least,” Ianto admitted.
“Alright. So, for now that is what we will do,” Jack said and had a sip of his coffee.
“Do you think John will be back?”
“He might, this time we owe him one though. If it weren´t for that ring they would have built a building over me or something.”
“It is actually a pity he’s so reckless. We could use someone with his skills.”
“I know, but he’s not at all reliable. We can’t risk it, not yet. Perhaps in the future, if he is still keen on spending some time here and he came around a little, noticed why Earth is worth defending, then we can give him a chance,” Jack said seriously before he couldn´t help himself from chuckling quietly.
“What?”
“You are probably the last person I thought would ever consider John for an actual position at Torchwood,” The Captain pointed out and smiled softly at his lover who shrugged slightly.
“You know me, Jack. I try to be partial. Give credit where it’s due. John was… is a mad man. But despite that, he saved you. Be it for whatever reason he had. He claims it to be love, but we both know love doesn’t work that way. So, the main point would be getting someone from the future with similar knowledge as the one you have to stay back, when we leave… that would be rather ideal.”
“It would be,” Jack thought to himself and leant against the wall, watching Ianto intently, “You´ll never stop surprising me will you Ianto?”
“I hope not. If so, then it would make our one hundred years together a rather dull life,” He smiled wryly.
Jack chuckled and nodded, “What if you get bored of me?!”
“Erm, I think you have enough stories for at least two hundred years to come. Plus, if we do manage something along the plans you mentioned, we’ll have quite some things to do with our time.”
“What if you meet someone else?” The Captain enquired feeling a little bit anxious, now that he considered the possible idea of Ianto meeting someone else. Of course he wouldn’t deny him, the life he promised him. Even if he did meet someone else, Jack would keep him alive for as long as his body would manage. But, his heart would be broken beyond repair…
Such an impossible thing not so long ago, all Ianto had to do was slip into his life, turn it upside down and make him love him the way he did… it didn’t take much to love Ianto Jones, he was a simple man. He was kind, honourable, loyal, caring…
Who on their right mind would let someone like him pass through their lives without allowing Ianto to change them a little or a lot for good?
“I love you Jack. My heart is not as whimsical, and even though it does sound too romantic to be true, I do believe two people can love each other until the end of time, or well, their life span, as to put it somehow,” Ianto paused, focussed on the other, “You’re that person for me, I know it, in here,” He said as he placed his hand on his heart.
Jack smiled at the sign, more than pleased with the reply, and closing the distance between the two of them he rested his face in Ianto´s shoulder as he felt the Welshman’s arms wrapping around his waist safely, “Hold me tight, don’t let go.”
“Never,” Came the determined reply, and Jack for once in his long life, felt as safe as he’s never felt before.
He was Ianto´s, and Ianto wouldn’t let go… finally, after all these years. He was truly loved.

They had both decided to go outside that day, everything was arranged, and even though their house in the Hill had a large glass wall that looked out over the cliff and to the endless ocean, with the orange colored sky with two half moons on it, Jack and Ianto had wanted to feel the breeze on their skin and their hair.
Ianto´s hair was longer than what it had being whilst working at Torchwood, even though his features remained the same, his hair was long, his clothes were more relaxed, a baggy pair of jeans with one of Jack´s favourites blue shirts hanging lose around his body and over a white t-shirt that he wore under it, not to get cold.
“It’s lovely out here,” Jack spoke, looking at his lover with adoring eyes as Ianto sat next to him, in the sleeping bag.
The Captain soon stretched an arm for Ianto to snuggle up, and a small content sound escaped his parting lips when feeling the Welshman’s hand over his chest.
“It is beautiful,” Ianto agreed.
Jack smiled when the other looked up at him, his lips met Ianto´s for a loving kiss, almost chaste but endless, lazy and longing whilst feeling long gentle fingers tangling in his hair.
“And I wasn’t, meaning the landscape, even though it is.”
Jack chuckled at that and grinned whilst locking eyes with his lover. They both knew what was going to happen, they had talked about this, they both felt it… it was time. But were they ready?
Sure Jack had often wanted to die for good, before meeting the Welshman but now, not all the lives he had lost would be enough if he would have been able to share them with his partner, “I´m scared,” he admitted, his voice barely audible as his deep blue eyes sought for comfort in the well known grey ones.
“Me too,” Came the simple reply. Jack smiled weakly and stroked his hand against Ianto´s arm.
“But this isn’t the end.”
“I told you before; there is nothing else after this, only darkness,” Jack said bitterly, not wanting to think of it much.
“The Doctor said we would live between one hundred, one hundred and twenty years, if we shared your gift, we managed to one hundred and seventy five,” The Welshman spoke quietly.
“So? We gained some time, now it’s about to end,” Jack swallowed.
“In all this time, I’ve been reading about death. It was always pretty much confirmed there was no life after it, but there are other theories.”
“Reincarnation is a myth; no one could ever prove that,” Jack said with a fond smile, because his lover was clinging to the last hope he could find at the time being.
“It might be, but Jack, if it isn’t. If there is the slightest chance of coming back… I ´will´ find you. I will move earth, sky, galaxies until the day I find you again… and if that is true, I will keep on doing it forever, until the end of time.”
“If that happens to be true, then I will wait for you, maybe even find you myself,” Jack said as he stroked his fingers against Ianto´s cheekbone and brought him closer for another kiss, “Always,” he whispered and closed his eyes whilst kissing his lover, the last remains of energy leaving his body as they passed from his lips to the other’s, until the rest dissipated into the air.
Holding the lifeless body to his own, Ianto felt tears scrolling down the corners of his eyes and down his cheeks.
Pressing his face to Jack’s shoulder, he wrapped his arm over the Captain’s chest and buried his nose against the other’s hair, “I´ll find you, again Jack. I promise,” He whispered before closing his eyes and drifting into a sleep, from which he would never, wake up again.
The End.
