FINLAND FST:
On aamus’ koittanut

Prologue: The Birth

01. The Finish Line - Snow Patrol

Cold water, cleaning my wounds
A sad parade, with a single balloon
I'm done with this, I'm counting to ten
Bluest seas, running to them

I feel like I am watching everything from space
And in a minute I'll hear my name and I'll wake
I think the finish line's a good place we could start
Take a deep breath, take in all that you could want

Act I: Finland and Sweden

02. Undantag - Bo Kaspers Orkester

Vi är ett virus i en statistik
en sensation utan publik

Vi är ett tåg utan nån räls
som åker liksom hur som helst

du och jag
är vi ett annat slag
är vi ett undantag
du och jag?

var inte misstänksam
för vi kan nåt som ingen kan
ibland så når man ända fram

Act II: The Years of Death

03. Lithium - Evanescence

Lithium, don't want to lock me up inside
Lithium, don't want to forget how it feels without
Lithium, I want to stay in love with my sorrow

Don't want to let it lay me down this time
Drown my will to fly
Here in the darkness I know myself
Can't break free until I let it go
Let me go

Darling, I forgive you after all
Anything is better than to be alone
And in the end I guess I had to fall
Always find my place among the ashes

Act III: The Finnish War

04. Day Fifteen: Betrayal - Ayreon

You never talk, he'll never know
What you have done
But can you live with this betrayal?

They found him out and let him go
I guess you've won
But one day, the truth might be unveiled

This memory burns inside
You can't forget, you cannot fight or erase it
Let it go, try to unwind
You'll have to tell and set it right
You cannot run, you cannot hide, so face it!
Wake up, free your mind

Act IV: Finland and Russia

05. Break me, Shake me - Savage Garden

I never thought I'd change my opinion again
But you moved me in a way that I've never known
You moved me in a way that I've never known
But straight away you just moved into position again
You abused me in a way that I've never known
You abused me in a way that I've never known

So break me shake me hate me take me over
When the madness stops then you will be alone
Just break me shake me hate me take me over
When the madness stops then you will be alone

Act V: Independence

06. Anything - Mae

Hope, it's the light that strikes
that burns inside of me
It's a blinding light but somehow I can see...again
When I've lost my way
It's becoming very clear
And it's coming around again

Every now and again sometimes
I get lost on the wind of a dream
The air gets clean and the seas get wide
and I can do anything
The pain it won't even cross my mind
There is wonder in everything
The ropes get loose and the chains unbind
and I can do anything

Somewhere between the darkness and the light
My spirit takes to flight
The colors fill the skies
And I'm free

07. Kaiken mailman pakanat - YUP

Kansan tahto on kirjoitettuna
kallioihin ja puihin.
Sieltä se kerran tiensä löytää
muutoin mykkiin suihin.
Kansan tahto on kirjoitettuna
tuleen, tuuleen ja veteen.
Niistä se kerran kumpuaa:
tulee puhtaana käteen
Ja suoraan nenän eteen...

Hauska on maa uusiksi jakaa
ja vaivihkaa paljon tärvellä,
kun ei tarvitse purra pihkaa
tyhjässä tuvassa talven tullen
jossain Polvijärvellä...

Ja siksi nyt
kuninkaiden kiviset kuvat
kaatuessaan kaunistuvat!
Ja jollei kaatolupaa saa,
niin me otetaan ihan omat luvat...
Se on demokratiaa.

Joko "Tuulan-tei" minun järkeni vei jo vuosia sitten
tai jokainen teistä on todella ratsastajapatsaan arvoinen!

Te kaiken maailman orvot pirut ja pakanat
suuressa Suomessa Jumalan selän takana!
Kumarat vartenne nostakaa.
Ottakaa tämä maa: se on sen, ken sen haluaa.

Act VI: Civil War

08. Realization - Ayreon

Now you know the truth, what will you do?
I still can't believe it's true...
You better believe it, and make them pay!
There has to be another way...

You cannot take this lying down!
I cannot stand up, can you show me how?
You must forgive them and open your heart
It's all my fault, it tears me apart!
It would have been better if you would have just died!
No, I've got to win this fight!
Can you face them after all you did?
I gotta reveal the feelings I hid

See him fight, he's all on his own...
I need your help, can't do it alone!
Listen to me, can you hear me shout?
Let me out!

Act VII: Winter War

09. Kamikaze - PJ Harvey

How could that happen?
How could that happen again?
Where the fuck was I looking
When all his horses came in?
And he built an army
Of kamikaze

Ten thousand willing
Pilots flying
Interfacing
Space and beyond
Built an army
To come and find me

Beyond all reason
Beyond all my hopes
The call of duty
Another war zone
(Makes me moan)

Kamikaze
Kamikaze
You can't touch me
Kamikaze

10. Ghost Love Score (Orchestral) - Nightwish

Act VIII: The Loss

11. Blood Tears - Blind Guardian

Can't hold it
It burns
Each night I cry in pain

And blood tears I cry
Endless grief remained inside
And blood tears I cry
Endless grief remained inside

It seems so clearly
Bent the bow
Cause life in me is gone
And a cruel wind's blowing cold
And a cruel wind's blowing cold
In blame

And life it shall wane
Each night I cry in pain

And blood tears I cry
Endless grief remained inside
Cut off your old friends hand

Act IX: The Survival

12. Still Alive - Lisa Misovsky

Just sunshine
And blue sky
That's just how it goes
For living here

Come fire
Come fire
Let it burn and love come racing through

Oh I'm still alive
I'm still alive
I can't apologise no

Oh I'm still alive
I'm still alive
I can't apologise no

Learn to lose
Learn to win
Turn my face against the wind

I will move fast
I will move slow
Take me where I have to go

Oh I'm still alive
I'm still alive
I can't apologise no

Historical notes/References:

The Years of Death: 1695-1697, about 30 % of Finland's population died of hunger, illnesses and war.

The Finnish War: Part of Russo-Swedish wars and Napoleonic wars. A war between Russia and Sweden, and when Sweden lost, Finland became an autonomous Grand Duchy that belonged to Russia. What many don't know, though, is the fact that Finland swore allegiance to Russia in March 1809, and the war itself ended in September 1809. So, in a way, Finland abandoned Sweden even before the war had reached its conclusion. (Wikipedia article for more information)

Finland and Russia: The song is supposed to depict the Russification of Finland, i.e. the years of oppression. Russia tried to put an end to Finland's autonomy and make Finland Russian, but the opposition was fierce.

Independence: Finland declared independence December 6th 1917, and was recognized January 4th 1918.

Kaiken maailman pakanat: The title would be translated as "All the pagans of the world". I'm not going to translate the whole song, though - I just don't have enough time and half of the jokes would probably be lost in the process. If someone wants to translate it, however, feel free to do so!

Finnish Civil War: Fought right after the Independence, from January to May in 1918. (Wikipedia article, which is actually quite detailed. I highly recommend to read it, because the Civil War had a lasting impact on Finnish culture and it's only recently that people are starting to talk openly about it.)

Winter War: The war of which Finland is most famous. Was fought against the Soviet Union, and even though Finland was the underdog in the war, with cunning tactics and high morale (sisu, you know), it managed to survive and remain independent. (Wikipedia article)

The losses: This is about the losses after the Continuation War against the Soviet Union, especially about the loss of Petsamo, which was seen as the "left hand of the Finnish Maiden". Thus the reference to cutting off the hand - because, really, that was exactly what happened.

Finlandia: A symphonic poem by the composer Jean Sibelius. It was, when it was composed, a protest against the Russian oppression and a tribute to Finland. Starting from 4:48, in the piece, you can hear a clear, melodic hymn: it is the Finlandia Hymn, and it does have lyrics to it, even though those aren't heard in this particular piece. I'll post them here, regardless, in case someone wants to know. (And besides, they're amazingly beautiful.)

Oi Suomi, katso, sinun päiväs' koittaa,
yön uhka karkoitettu on jo pois,
ja aamun kiuru kirkkaudessa soittaa
kuin itse taivahan kansi sois'.
Yön vallat aamun valkeus jo voittaa,
sun päiväs' koittaa, oi synnyinmaa.

Oi nouse, Suomi, nosta korkealle
pääs' seppelöimä suurten muistojen,
oi nouse, Suomi, näytit maailmalle
sa että karkoitit orjuuden
ja ettet taipunut sa sorron alle,
on aamus' alkanut, synnyinmaa.

In English:

Finland, behold, your day has now come dawning;
Banished is night, its menace gone with light,
Larks’ song again in morning-brightness ringing,
Filling the air to heaven's great height,
And morning's glow, night's darkness overcoming;
Your day is come, o my native land.

O Finland, rise, stand proud, the future facing,
Your valiant deeds recalling, once again;
O Finland rise, in the world's sight erasing
From your fair brows vile slavery's stain.
You were not broken by oppressors ruling;
Your morning's come, o my native land.
