I don't normally do posts about religion. Generally speaking, religion and I have a working relationship of mutual ignorance. I ignore it, and it tends to ignore me. Granted, I have to be a little more forceful in my ignoring when the boys in the very nice suits and bicycles come knocking, but aside from that, I tend to steer clear, simply cause it ( Read more... )

Asimov did the same thing in "The Last Question", except it was a computer answering the question "can entropy be stopped". Over time it evolved and extended itself forward and backward in time, eventually humans lived in a non-corporeal state, constantly connected to each other and to this computer. By the time it figured out the answer, the Universe was in its last throes and humanity didn't exist as individuals anymore, just as parts of the gestalt; so it decided to create a new universe and tell the people in it. The first words of the new universe were "let there be light".

I knew there was another, similar story I'd read somewhere, I just couldn't remember what it was. And, of course it'd be Asimov. Heh.
