your pics are much better than the photography i've been toying with lately...

i especially like the london night shot, the paper cranes, the spider web, and the sky through the trees... very pretty!

thank you!

i'm trying to decide if photography lies more in taking the pictures or editing them... i suppose it would have to be taking them but it seems like with photoshop you can make up for just about any error in the actual picture taking.

i think the true photography lies in the taking of the picture, though i very much enjoy enhancing my images with a photo editor. the best edited pics start with an image that was awesome before an editor changed anything. i always feel like i'm cheating a little when i edit my pics, and i am always aware that the edits i add are a completely different art form than the taking of the picture...

most friends of mine who are heavy into photography cringe at the idea of photo editing... they have a point in insisting that things like lighting and color can be captured beautifully just through your lens with real dedication and practice... and what they do really is art. photo editing can also be an art, but i think it is good to differentiate the two.

I think it all depends on the type of photo editing you're doing and the reason you're doing it. About half of the photo editing I do is to make up for a camera that's designed more to be idiot proof than for serious photography, so it doesn't give the user much control over the way the picture is taken (white balance, shutter time, etc.) The other half is to put an interesting spin on a picture... unrealistic colors and such, to make it more of my own rather than just an attempt to reproduce as faithfully as possible something that i only observed. If you've got a nice camera that can take excellent photos to begin with then you should definitely take the time before snapping a picture to come up with a good one rather than relying on editing software.
