What does it mean to be humane?

The dictionary describes the word 'humane' thusly:hu·mane -adjective
1. characterized by tenderness, compassion, and sympathy for people and animals, esp. for the suffering or distressed: humane treatment of horses.
2. of or pertaining to humanistic studies.
The dictionary often falls short in practice- objective ( Read more... )

I've often wondered that myself. I was once *almost* human, but I have a feeling it was nothing like the real thing, these emotions.

My Lord felt the same way about me. He destroyed me because I was a terrible person, but feeling later that his actions were drastic, he rebuilt me. Maybe it has to do with karma or something..

I think mostly alot of people are scared or confused, so they do "bad" things, and from someone else's perspective, the person appears to be evil. Some people only feel when they're put through extremes, (for example, a desensitized person.)

It's good to be humane, but not gullible or naive.

Excuse me? science is not life? that is incorrect. Science is everything. Of course, 90% of everyone believes in the soul, and real pure emotions.. it's all drivel.

There is no such thing as tenderness. There is the handling carefully of something, but tenderness? does not exist. It's all a façade.

Humanity's meaning is to defeat death and create. Nothing more, nothing less. Those who choose to believe an old beared man is sitting up in the clouds ready to grant wishes, are fools.

I know an old man who sits in the sky. He doesn't grant wishes, but he does play a good game of chess ( ... )

Uh huh.

Gods. Delusions, is what that is. Man has helped himself and forged from the Earth what he needed. God didn't personally carve the wheel, or smite the evil ones. We're the ones left to do that.

Science creates everything; life, death, ways to make life better. Why should we still live in caves when science screams for us to progress?

Diligence, not passion. Science does not love, and thusly, the individual must remove themselves from such.. weak emotions in order to achieve their level of intellect. Emotions breed chaos, sadness, failure. Such things are unnecessary in this particular field. If you don't like it, go paint your life away.

I wasn't quite.. ranting. Just stating my views. I've been through enough skeptics in my life to make me bitter.

Good, go love everyone. Produce more people. Whatever. There is no place in science for your views, unfortunately. If this is such a waste of time, why write such a lengthy self-preaching reply?

because you're weak that's your preference. You obviously have no self control ( ... )

Makes perfect sense.

Just be careful not to confuse "human" with "humane." A lot of times there's a big gap between the two--humans can become monsters worse than the demons I've met.

Or are you insinuating that we should start being nicer to the monsters?

It makes total sense.

Generally, things really can't be summerized in a single definition although I don't know what a dictionary is.

Besides, if a human can be an animal, does that constitute them as human?

I think everyone has a chance. To be humane and to receive humanity. Neither of those can be taken for granted, and they can be taken away. But that doesn't mean that they can't be restored.
