Many places in the UK are gluten-savvy, especially in London. Beware of anything sweetened with glucose, as it's often from wheat, as well as most sausages, which may contain breadcrumbs. Have fun!
Supermarkets (of a decent size) are good for finding GF snacks and stuff. Tesco, Asda, Sainsburys and Morrisons all have Free From sections if they are big enough (avoid the little ones on high streets, they're useless), and there are usually nice snacks of various brands to choose from. I've even found some frozen ready meals that are GF, although those are obviously over in the frozen section :)
A cheap eating-out option is Wetherspoons, a pub-kinda style restaurant place - they list GF options on their menu and they're pretty tasty (although if you're going for GF and veggie, it may be a push to find at that location).
Ah, sounds like the situation over here, with the difference between a full supermarket and little express model. Cool.
Heh. And the eating out situation sounds like here, too! Many restaurants have gluten free options - providing you eat meat! I'm so thankful for Indian and Thai restaurants. There's only so many many over-dressed Greek Salads you can face before you want to kill someone!
Re: the aeroplane food - It's my understanding that they offer an Asian Veg Meal, which is Indian food, and an Oriental Veg Meal, which is Chinese. In my experience you can only ask for Vegetarian OR Gluten Free, but that may just be a domestic airline thing. It's certainly not possible on Qantas domestic flights to specify both - we've tried. I'll certainly give it a shot with Qatar, who we're flying with this time.

If there is no gluten free option order the salad or fruit plate and bring your own dressing. And yes, having your own food is a good idea because honestly the gluten free meals, while usually actually gluten free, are rarely very tasty.

Re: the flights - the GF meal sadly is always meat, and I'm vegetarian. From looking at the airline website, the Asian Veg Meal is Indian food, while the Oriental Veg Meal is Chinese. It'd be nice if they'd let you specify GF *and* Veg, but in my experience it's one or the other. I think stuffing my handbag with tofu sandwiches, pao de queijo and crackers may be the way to go :D
Fruit plate/salad and tofu sandwiches, for sure, then. I'm actually allergic to corn/maize a well as gluten intolerant, so I basically can't touch a damn thing on an airplane, or in most grocery stores for that matter. But I dimly recall what it was like when I was "just" gluten free. :)
