Sorry this is late.

Not much I can add to the above insights, except that I've owned or lived with many animals in my time and although I have become 'used' to the pain of losing them, the pain is just as real. I think I've just become more accepting of it as part of the price for enjoying having them around me during their lifetimes. Your dog was very lucky to be loved so well and maybe, in time another lucky animal you can love will come along. There's no such thing as a replacement, but in my experience, our hearts are very elastic so there's always room to make a bit more love.

Take care,

Kate

Well, what could I add? I had a RAT, and I loved her more than life. She led a short, but rather adventurous life, and that is only my fault, because I moved from place to place, so she had to endure all the terrible things for a rat - over-heated cars, draughts and so on. She fell ill with pneumonia when she was 1,5 y/o, but managed to pull through (all the injections, I'd rather not hear her crying again). My mother was giving her medicine and feeding her with a syringe. Rats rarely recover from such illnesses, but she did, and stayed with us for some months, until she finally gave up (she was half-paralyzed in the end).
I will always remember her eyes, when she was going through 'moods', this warm little fur under my shirt.

I always wanted to have a rat! Do they need a lot of care healthwise?
And btw, the cat I mentioned here, who was my main animal company this past year, has been killed by a car a few days ago. Two days after I posted this. What's wrong with May?? It's Morrissey's month, it should be perfect! All 3 of them, my brother, my dog and "my" cat, died in May. I can only hope I'll die in May too, just to make some sense ;)

Rats are amazing creatures, they are very intelligent. If you buy a healthy rat, he or she will be with you for up to three years (some live longer). You just have to avoid direct exposure to sun, draughts and low/high temperatures. Otherwise they require only your love. Also, they cannot be left alone for more than two days, they cannot take that. If you know you will not be able to spend a lot of time with her, consider to buy a couple (two girls or two boys). Girls are more gentle. If you have a couple, they will not be so attached to you. But they will keep each other company when you are away ( ... )

I read the newest reviews on Passions page, and here's some banter, that made me remember your post>
"Now when you drive home, be very careful, don't run over any pussycats, and don't run over any British singers... If you have to drive over one or the other, make it the British singer..."

I lost my beloved minpin Josie to a hit and run tonight. I have a zillion guestions and a trillion feelings that are so overwhelming. This blog helped. i have to be strong for my kids and Josie's litter mate Belle. I will never understand though, why the person who hit my dog never stopped. How is any life worth taking not showing remorse.

A hit and run is one of the worst ways. In my case, Though I wasn't there, I know the driver stopped and helped carry him to the sidewalk. It's heartbreaking that Belle waits for her... I'm so sorry for your loss, truely sorry. I'm not one to say "It's going to be alright". It's gonna hurt for such a long time, and then you'll finally be able to look back to her with a smile. Watch Belle closely, she will mourn but won't understand, so look after her in case of deep depression.
