I'm trying to make myself into a composer. First things first, when people ask me what I do, I ell them I'm a composer. Yes, I know that I haven't gone through a composition major, haven't studied with composers, and have limited experience with it so far, but damnit, I'm a composer. If I say it enough, it'll have to be true ( Read more... )

I'll have to have a talk with him sometime. Did you mean sweet as in awesome or sweet as in "you're so sweet"? haha

Hey calling yourself what you are studying to be and want to become, not such a bad idea. I mean really a composer is a type of artist and to be an artist you have to have a certain type of arrogance to believe that that is what you are and therefore are a cut above the rest and can claim the title. Without that arrogance you are just another person who say writes in their spare time or paints from time to time (in my case) or something like that. You have to believe you are to be said artist right? Self actualizing therefore isn't such a bad idea, otherwise it is just self defeating I suppose.

Along similar lines, I studied to be a trombone-playing music teacher. Right now, I teach one band of 9 kids, two English classes, and two history classes. I am lucky if I get to play one high-school level etude for my own pleasure in the course of a week. I could go around crowing that I was a trained trombone player or that I am a band director, but neither of those is too representative of what I really DO these days.

If you find that anyone gives you any flack for being a composer without the "right" pedigree (not that such a pedigree is available in Albion, Michigan), ask them to explain their case to Danny Elfman.

Thanks. I guess first things first then...I need to keep working to back it up. I haven't had a lot of people questioning me, but just a couple, and that's what lead me to rant for a sec. Glad to know one of my favorite film composers started out in the same boat I'm in (kinda).

I'm glad you see it the way you do. Means a lot to me, too.

I have to say though, it took me a few minutes to remember who this is...cause I don't think either of us has even commented on the others journal.

Thanks!
