I've said it before and I'll say it again, this is an intriguing AU. You've managed to maintain the complicated relationship between them -- the connection, the bond, but also the tension (of ideals and beliefs). The imagery here is striking because it's rare that one visualizes Charles being physically broken down.
I'm glad you stuck with your original vision of delaying the reveal that Erik and Charles are actively (yet covertly) on the same side. Your summary description sets the context in place.
