Here's a pop quiz (I really am asking): To whose lost youth was Gideon referring?
To get all existential 'n stuff (in honor of your new icon), it was my intent that each of them really was enjoying the fireflies but the other didn't fully understand that; conversely, each of them was trying to protect the other, but regretfully knew that was ultimately out of their power. The "lost youth," appearing in the middle of the piece, was intended as a fulcrum of uncertainty/double meaning. An "old" guy affectionate toward a much younger man, wishing he was younger himself because of the dynamics of the relationship, and secondly, of course, the conditions that made Spencer naive yet adult at a very early age. (BTW I refuse to count words to see if this response to a response is longer than the fic! :)

And now for something completely different,
I LOVE that icon. When I saw it posted I laughed and laughed. It's the closest I've ever come to accepting an icon someone else has made.
OMG I just laughed again.

And yeah, I grew up in NY (where there are fireflies) and I now live in L.A. (no fireflies) and have been to Vegas a few times (no fireflies), so that was something that really struck me with your fic.

I'm so glad you brought up firefly distribution, because I'm writing a fic in which it's essential that there are fireflies in Texas, and I hadn't even thought to check! Luckily for me they're there, although not as many as in NY (where I also grew up, BTW)
Thanks!
