Have you considered:

a) Tying them down/tethering them to something
b) Feeding them hefty amounts of sugar and locking them in the backyard, so that after a massive sugar high, they drop nearly dead, exhausted
c) Scaring them into silence ("If you leave this couch, the Devil will eat you.")

While considered "mean," "safe," and "psychologically scarring," these methods just might do the trick.

Yeah, the movies have been my only respite thus far. But then again, while watching a movie the younger one spread a bag of chips ALL OVER the leather couch he was on....
