Christmas Card Dilemma!

My good friend will be in basic over Christmas and I wanted to send a card to help keep his spirits up. However, I was told to send "no cards, only letters". Would trimming a piece of cardstock down to letter/envelope size and then decorating it count as a "card" in the USMC's eyes??? I really want to send him something, but don't want him to get

*shrug* I sent him cards and letters; I never heard that it was a problem. Just don't send one of those singing ones!
