This was just superb. I love this series, for it allows us readers to see the very complex relationship between Beckett and his murderess in a very different but revealing light. I think this chapter shows a very important and intriguing part of Cutler- his self-discipline and (morbid) curiosity. You know, sometimes I’ve described him as someone who looks at people as a spoiled, cruel child would watch a kitten he’s about to torture. Clinically, detachedly, and with an overwhelming curiosity. This sentence resonated that feeling to me: What manner of intelligence did a gutter rat have? And his blood lust at the end was so true to character- the image of the Roman circus was perfect. And the way she frustrated his expectations! Haha! I enjoyed that a lot. But somehow, I feel she only did it for the gallery… I don’t think she actually felt that compassion.

Wonderful writing, specially the way you describe the London streets, echoes and underlings. It reminds me so much of From Hell, but with one difference- the comic is in black and ( ... )
