Why I am so interested in Adam Lambert's career. Last night I got pulled up short reading JoeMyGod's blog. It was kind of shitty getting called out by gay men as one of the over-40's who is a Glambert fan. But I also discovered some really harsh criticism of Adam as a contender and a credible vocalist. I guess I just believe that most gay men know culture and have a better ear for music, eye and sense of rhythm for dance, etc. Some of them called Adam out as a hack, off-key, second-rate and just generally a bad vocalist. I began to question my own abilities by the end of reading the first page of comments.
Oh by the way this will ramble all over the place.
So then I'm also reading comments and blog posts all over the net. One issue that people seem to have with Adam is the fact that they believe that AI is looking for the next American pop star. And they may be right. I've admitted before I have only watched one other season of AI and that one we got America's Next Country Star. Yeah, Carrie is a "pop artist" sort of these days but she is a recognized country star who tours with other country artists. She's not on tour with Justin Timberlake, dare I say Fall Out Boy (sell outs), or any other artists that are playing on Top 40 radio.
Now Archie and Cook they seem to have filled a pop star slot. Cook though can easily translate back into the rock world and I hope he does. Taylor? Well nobody knows where he fits except in Vegas back in the 50's and 60's opening for Old Blue Eyes or Paul Anka.
So the question becomes, is AI America's Next Pop Idol? If so then Adam needs to go home...no Adam needs to get out on the road fronting an alt/indie/punk/goth rock band. It is making me crazy when people keep trying to equate the boy to something out of the 70's or 80's. Randy is right when he tells Americans that Adam is current. But I'm seeing that those of us who frequent Warped Tour, Bamboozle, SXSW and watch Fuse are apparently are a tiny minority compared to those who pay mega-bucks for arena tours of the Jonas Brothers, Britney, Beyonce, Motley Crue, U2 and STP/Velvet Revolver/whoever Scott Weiland is fronting this week and watch MTV. To date NO ONE has compared Adam to Davey Havoc, Gerard Way, Coby Shaddix or Marilyn Manson either on looks or vocals. Adam could so be an opening act for A.F.I., H.I.M., Lostprophets, Papa Roach or 30 Seconds to Mars. If he goes the electronika/techno route then send him out with Blaqk Audio or InnerPartySystem.
No matter how it gets sliced and diced, Adam Lambert needs to be off AI before he's in the top 5. I only want to have to give him up to 19E and TPTB for one year then I'm going to start paying for tickets to go see him on tour and buy his CD's. He's not America's Next Pop Star. And until I am told by a credible vocal coach that this guy truly can not sing and does not have talent...although I love all you queer boys to death, YOU'RE WRONG! If you think Adam is not able to become a successful rocker then please explain to me how people like Axyl Rose, Scott Weiland, Mick Jagger and Vince Vaughn ever got signed. In the mainstream rock world there isn't a credible vocalist among them. I love Aerosmith, Smashing Pumpkins and The Cure but that doesn't mean that Steve Tyler, Billy Corrigan or Robert Smith can sing to save their asses. Even My Chemical Romance and Taking Back Sunday. Gerard has vocal issues and thank god for auto-tuners because Adam is tone-deaf. About the only current male vocalist I can think of off the top of my head that is at all good...Stephen Christian from Anberlin.
Ok...I'm done. I still don't know why I'm basically obsessed with this kid. No! I'm not some creepy ass cougar frauen who wants to do him. I just find him really fascinating as a human being and as an artist.
Peace out bitches.
