Can we just say good-bye to the music industry?
Ok kiddies here's the deal.
Yes, the economy sucks.
Yes, you're parents aren't giving you an allowance and you're either too young to get a job (not too young to babysit) or too fucking lazy.
Yes, if you're a college student, I know you're working your ass off for you book money. Funny thing...you guys and gals are the one who do buy your music and street team you asses off for "free" tix. Props!!
Here's the deal. I'm an old fart single income, single mom. I have a 17 year old that grows out of shoes faster than you want to know. I'm paying off a big PLUS loan that helped his sister finish college. I'm lucky some months if I've got two nickels to rub together. It pains me that I haven't been able to go to the number of shows I went to two years ago or buy the number of CD's I did.
But the bottom line is that I do pay for my shit. I don't steal it and I don't try to con poor-ass musicians out of guestlist spots. And kids even major label artists can be amongst the broke. Understand that the only money they see up front is the merch sales for the night and that's their gas and food money for the next day in a lot of cases. Oh yeah, there are bus-bands with riders and stuff. But...do you realize that that is all on loan? Yeah, at the end of tour, first cut of ticket sales goes to label execs, management and pays for things like leasing the bus and all the front line equipment and roadies and food and... Get the picture? It doesn't leave much left over for the actual musician(s).
So if you have a computer, go to Pandora radio and listen. Go to your favorite artists' myspace, website, iLike and listen to their stuff. But then SUCK IT UP! Yeah, it sucks that you have to miss the tour when it stops in your area cuz you don't have the dinero. Every time they guestlist you? That's money out of their pockets. They have to pay for those tickets. Surprise!
No, you can't buy the album the day it drops. Cry me a river.
I'm sorry but I'm one of the ones who feeds these guys and gals, provides them a safe place to sleep, slips them a ten-spot for gas and brings care packages to venues. Why? Because I've seen them hungry. I've known them to spend nights in very scary places. I know they've had to cancel a gig cuz they couldn't afford to get there. And I happen to like going to their shows and buying their albums. I want them to have long, happy careers. No, most times I can't afford it. I justify it as part of my regular grocery bill. They're my road-kids.
Point of this rant? Don't go on blogs, message boards or social networking sites and ask people where you can steal music. K? Thanks.
