if you do get a puupy, you prolly should get 2, and if you can from the same liter- just cause it's easier to keep a dog healthy and active if it has another dog to play with all the time. And less fighting occurs when puppies are associated with each other at young ages. Btw, what kind?

the answer to most of your questions is simply:
depends on if i have a roommate or not...

as far as the breed--same thing...however, i wont live with one of those toy dogs created solely for the purpose of putting it in a purse...i'm a mid-size kind of gal:
siberian huskeys, alaskan malamutes, german shepherds, golden retrievers, border collies...you get the idea...
