i've been using The Writer's Market, a big thick handbook you can find at books & co. or barnes & noble. it's basically the end-all resource for writers just starting to navigate the business side of writing. it has exhaustive lists of agents and publishers by category (book publishers, magazines and literary journals, contests, etc.) and gives details about each one (how to contact, submission guidelines, genres they publish, if they accept unsolicited queries or only agented manuscripts, etc.). the literary agencies have similar details in their entries. it even gives sample query letters and articles and advice from editors and published authors. there is a new edition each year with the most updated information. it's taught me everything i know about how to sell fiction. i highly recommend it, especially for beginners.
