Scripting classes?

Seattle area folks: I need to learn scripting and need a structured classroom setting. Teaching myself via books is not an option. I'm checking local community colleges for possible classes. Recommendations on what to look for? Where else to look ( Read more... )

I am not a programmer, so I can only offer my engineering 2 cents. SQL is a database, so unless you're working with stuff in databases, that's probably not going to be very useful. I use Visual Basic for Applications with Excel to do a lot of my data crunching. I think Perl might be your best bet - it's simple and powerful, and well suited to manipulating things outside of programs.

I live and breathe relational databases at work, so I do need to learn SQL at some point, but, yeah, I think Visual Basic and/or Perl are what I need.

Most of the scripts I'd be writing would be for use with a library program called OCLC Connexion Client. That probably doesn't tell you much. ;)

According to OCLC's documentation:

The client supports macros written using OCLC Macro Language (OML), which provides:
- Standard BASIC functions and statements
- Macro commands developed specifically for the client
