I love dance. I love contemporary dance - and for years have subscribed to UCLA’s Dance Series just to indulge these desires. Of course I have no background, skills, or technical knowledge, but watching a dance performance is like experiencing life before language. It’s primal and yet complete.

Your powers of observation and ability to eloquently express it never ceases to impress me.

Yes indeed. You describe it so that I almost want to give dance another chance.

But I know from reasonably extensive experience that the reality of dance performances is much more boring to me than the enticement they offer in description.

But I'm glad it exists.

heh, I know Dance is one of those things like raw oysters that only a few of my friends really like - and even then tack on the word "contemporary" and the population narrows even further.

Oddly, when it comes to performance, my eyes glaze over at classical and light up at the chance to see contempory.

The opposite reaction is in play for me when it comes to actually dancing.

It's pretty standard to light dance from the side, for exactly the reason you state- to highlight the body. Usually it doesn't work quite as well as you describe, showing the muscles and all. When we do dance shows, we have front light as well as side light; it's all kids, and grandma wants to see little Junior's face.

I'm glad you enjoyed the show! I generally understand classical ballet, but contemporary stuff? Not so much. I did like the Alvin Ailey dance company when they came to town. Again, I didn't necessarily understand it, but I liked it. And I'm not as articulate about it as you are. :)

I love when you go see dance - then i get to read your post on it and see it through your eyes. Much better than seeing it through mine.
