A beautiful post. Hedonism is widely embraced by certain niches of parenting sub-culture, only under different names. Creative partnership, the partnership paradigm, etc. The basic philosophy is one of not competing with our children, but helping them embrace their desires, with the understanding that the deepest human desires are those of connection and pleasure. It can get tricky combining that with the actual world we live in, however.
This was an intriguing read. I admit that the word "hedonism" bears negative connotations for me, based upon a relationship I had with a misguided hedonist. I will need to read it a second time in order to glean everything you are saying. The first read through has left me impressed and given me a new interest in the concept of pleasure for its own sake. I have lived a very selfish life, but not a life wherein I allowed myself both selfishness and pleasure. Indeed, I'm not sure I've even understood pleasure and displeasure.
I should like to speak to you further on this topic in person sometime. It is topical to my life to learn about identifying pleasure, and I am more open than I have ever been to learning about new ways of thinking.
Thank you for this. I appreciate having those little nodes of my brain rubbed now and again. :)
