Safety First

I'm taking a motorcycle safety course next month to get my motorcycle license (although you don't need one for the Vespa technically, I may one day upgrade). If anyone has been thinking of doing this and wants to join me, let me know and I'll hit you with the details. It's $265 and in Hyde Park over the course of a weekend (Friday 6-11, Sat/Sun

I've been wanting to do this for a while, but I don't live anywhere near you )-: So I'll just have to go alone. Hope you have fun!

That would be so awesome! My friend Amber and I are already signed up. Hop on Streetwise Cycle School and register! We're signed up for the 9/19 weekend, the "BA28" PM classes. Hit me on AIM to confirm the info if you want.

What did you have to do to register and insure the vespa? Did you get one of those tiny plates?

No you don't need plates for 50cc and less, you don't even need insurance or anything, just a regular drivers license. I did get insurance but you don't need it.

Rilly? And you can drive them on public roads? They're street legal without plates? That's pretty impressive for such a regulated state like MA.

I assume only surface streets and not parkways?

A vespa is a motorized bike according to MA law, it only goes 35mph so you wouldn't bring it on a highway. Also by law they have the right to use all public ways in the Commonwealth, "except limited access or express state highways where signs prohibiting bicycles have been posted." You get a little reg sticker from the dealership and that's it.

I highly approve of the MSF course. I took it when I got my bike even though I had ridden years ago. Here in WI taking the course exempts you from having to take the road test at the DMV. Its a horrible test where they follow you around city streets in a car giving you directions over a helmet intercom. If you can even hear them the testers are insanely picky about your performance.

But I recommend the course, there are just so many things that you learn that if you ever need them, you probably wouldn't have learned them on your own through years of riding. Beside once you have the endorsemet you can get a bigger bike. I think a Ural with sidecar is a perfect auto replacement. So much cargo room....
