We already savagely mocked Al Gore's "lockbox" idea, why shouldn't we take the next step and show that as a people we don't understand the systems that support us.

Yeah, when you put your money into a savings account, the money isn't actually there, the bank goes and uses it for whatever.

What Republicans are saying now is that balance sheet is so much fiction, and they should continue to loot the bottom 95% for the top 5%.

It is exactly like going into the bank and finding out they have no intention of returning the money you deposited.

This is basically advertising; repeat the same thing often enough, and in a compact form, people believe it. It's like any other myth. The Republicans have never had anything real to work with - I'm pretty sure they're quite conscious that their strategies are intended to enrich a few, screw more widespread prosperity or longer term planning - and so they offer mythology instead.
