Film and Fruitvale Station

I saw Fruitvale Station on Friday night.

I love going to see films; I don't watch as many documentary or dramas as I'd like - heck, I don't watch as many total as I like, so I mostly watch kid's movies, blockbusters, and maybe an action flick. But dv_girl relented, and we went to see Fruitvale Station on Friday night ( Read more... )

Wish I knew what to say.

The whole situation is pretty terrible. I can understand how requiring any accountability might make policemen feel they're being targeted, victimized and deprived of useful tools (it isn't an easy job, and they don't know when even the most mundane situation might turn nasty), but the current complete lack of accountability is basically asking for all the worst stereotypes to come out. People join up for any number of reasons, and some of those reasons really are "I'm a self-righteous bully who really enjoys getting to be a warrior saint no matter what I do."

The problem comes that they know they won't get justice out of it. They're investigated by their bosses, they're tried by their boxes, and then, maybe later, the judicial system gets involves with subpoenas and trials, but not until after they've lost their job. And rarely are their bosses interested in preventing the next incident as much as covering this one up.

And that's not fair to the cops, and it's definitely not fair to the civilians on the street who have no one to turn to in the case of police or judicial misconduct.

I'm so very sorry that this happened to you and your family.

Much gentleness from me here.
