As the door to her bedroom slammed behind an irate Usagi, Chibiusa’s shoulders slumped and she dropped onto her bed with a sigh. Normally she enjoyed the fights they shared. It was a chance for her to prove her mental superiority and her maturity, to dominate her verbally since she wasn’t big enough or strong enough to do so physically. She often wondered if Usagi also secretly enjoyed their battles, but of course she’d never ask.
Honestly, she didn’t know why today was any different, but she just felt..tired. Tired of running, tired of hiding from Rubues and the Ayakashi sisters, tired of trying to pretend that everything was going to be all right. She considered herself a strong and self-reliant person, and she despised admitting any weakness, but sometimes...sometimes...she just wanted her mother and father.
And that was the crux of the matter, wasn’t it? If she didn’t succeed here, she’d never see her mother again, and that was simply unbearable.
A soft rumble/purr sounded in her ear, and Chibiusa turned to see a concerned face starring back at her, a bright crescent moon shining above sad eyes.
Smiling slightly, she opened her arms and the ball floated into them for a tight embrace. Sometimes she felt like Luna-P was the only true friend she had in this century. Oh, she liked Usagi’s friends just fine, and of course Mamo-chan was perfect, but she couldn’t be honest with them about her problems. Only to Luna-P could she pour out her heart and soul and admit her deepest fears. That she was a failure. That she would be captured and killed - or worse - before she could complete her mission.
That her mother would die and it would be her fault.
But Chibiusa learned quickly that when she was at her worst, Luna-P was at its best, either by luck or by design. The little ball said nothing, but warmth, comfort and, yes, serenity enveloped her like a cloak on a frosty morning. Squeezing tightly, she allowed the emotions to surround and support her, and slowly, very slowly, hope always returned.
Once, she was obsessed with finding out how her floating friend truly worked. How it could sense her emotions so perfectly and know exactly what comfort to give her. How its magic worked, and whether or not its powers would grow along with her own. Whether there was - as she suspected - a part of herself somehow implanted in its programming. Whether it was just a very smart toy...or something more.
But in the past few months, she’d discovered that none of those questions truly mattered. Whenever she needed it, Luna-P was there. End of story. What more could she possibly ask for?
Chibiusa held on for one more moment, then she released her friend with an audible sigh. Luna-P floated back ever so slightly, and Chibiusa allowed herself a small smile.
“Thank you.”
Luna-P said nothing, but the large eyes suddenly didn’t look so sad anymore.
