Well, I made the cake. And then I went away for the weekend to see the Fall Fair on Salt Spring and show my grandmother my wedding dress. Then, the AC flight attendants threatened to strike, so I ended up flying to Toronto on Monday, a week early, for our wedding BBQ. I am amazingly grateful for my life and our travel benefits, but honestly... I'm ( Read more... )

Banana bread with sliced bananas? Madness!

Also, I am requesting that this bear story be told.

A few weeks ago we went backcountry camping in Manning Park and it was basically the worst camping trip ever. 13km hike, didn't arrive at the site until dusk, horrific mosquitos, and then spent the WHOLE NIGHT listening to bears rattle the bear cache, stomp around, and stuffle at our tent. (In fairness, it could have been other things snuffling at the tent, but the stomping and rattling was definitely bears. But my shoes were in a different spot in the morning when we got out of the tent.) Basically it was miserable and really scary. I like camping but I'm kind of cool with the drive-up variety, lol.

My forays into cake baking and frosting making have led me realize that pretty much all icing sugar-based frostings are tooth-achingly sweet. The way to go is definitely a Swiss meringue buttercream (although NOT the damn cream cheese one I made for Marx's wedding cake!) - they are a little more work but totally worth it, and now that you have Kitchen Aid, it can do all the hard work for you :)

Also, I second the request for the bear story!

I'm totally going to give that icing a go... once I figure out how to make a cake that doesn't have the consistency of a hockey puck, lol.

See above for bear story :)
