Oh wow, so here I am, back on LJ! I check my Friends Page from time to time, but I've decided to start posting every so often again. I doubt anyone will read, much less be entertained, but oh well

becoming a baseball fan is a good thing! Although you may be a little confused, because the Tigers are actually the best team ever and the Yankees are pretty much the devil. sorry.
See, this is where I don't fit in with "normal" sports fans. I'm just too damn nice about it all. I have a friend who also says the Yankees are the devil, because he's a White Sox fan. Now, I don't necessarily say any one team is "the devil"... hey, I know the Tigers are good (better than the White Sox!).
Of course, catch me on a day when the Yanks are playing them... but that's when I have to try and kick my niceness away and pretend I'm competitive for a couple hours :)
well don't get me wrong, NYC is pretty amazing. I've only been there once, and I'm sure if I lived there I'd probably like the Yankees, but here is why they are the devil: In baseball, there is no salary cap, like in football or basketball, and the Yankees have the highest payroll in all of baseball (and of all major sports teams actually), so they can pretty much sign any free agent that they want. In other words, they can use their money to buy the best players possible, and build a team comprised of overpaid star players, but in the end still can't win, or even get to the World Series. That's why most people hate the Yankees. Sure they have talent, but in the end, money just doesn't win championships.
*Sigh* see, I despise conversations like this, which is what makes me such a horrible sports fan. But I'll just throw back 2 things: First, the Yankees are not the only team in baseball to have overpaid players (not to mention there are plenty of overrated players out there, and to be fair, some of them are on the Yankees too). Second, yes, they may not be having their greatest year ever THIS year... but if you're going to blast the team as a whole, then look at the history too: check the numbers and see if any other team has won the World Series 26 times. Money issues aside, the statement about them still not being able to win or getting to the World Series is (overall) not entirely correct.
oh I totally agree that other players are overpaid. In fact, I thing EVERY player in every major sport is overpaid. Most of them are making millions a year, and even the worst players are making a league minimum $500,000 a year! When teachers and police officers make about 1/10 of that a year (if that) it's pretty absurd. But what the Yankees can do is offer more money to players than other teams can. You're right that players from other teams are overpaid, but if you look at the payroll numbers, the Yankees are by far the most overpaid sports team in history. In fact, A-rod makes more money a year (25 mil) than the entire Florida Marlins team
( ... )
I also think all major sports players are overpaid as well. It's ridiculous! I mean, they are getting paid to exercise a lot and play the games... then get arrested for drug abuse and dog-fighting. I wish I could get away with that for multi-millions a year! (Okay, not really...)
