College! Yay...?

Hey everyone. I'll try to get around to posting the text of my senior speech at some point, because there have been a few requests here and there. Buuuuuuuut I'm now going to be posting the colleges that I'm applying to, so I can attempt to garner the approval of the masses. In no particular order ( Read more... )

Obelrin would probably take you without any fuss, but make sure you know what you're getting into. Oberlin does not look kindly on us "preppy" freshmen. And the trend is surely only going to continue. So, unless you wish to lock yourself in mortal combat with the shoeless, dirty-dirty hippies (which is a noble aspiration, to be sure), I'd invest in some camoflauge... (ripped pants, ratty t-shirts, ratty shoes (if at all), a mohawk... use your imagination). I only avoid getting wary looks from the upperclassmen because I treat myself as fesh meat and don't ask questions.

Also, another word of warning. While Oberlin has many strong academic programs, there are a few (not many, but they are notable) programs that are very hit-or-miss. Do you have the slightest inkling of what you would want to study.

On a side note, I think you should go to UC Merced. You would be as a king, to be sure.

Oh, and probably less apps, since I'm sure at least two accept the common app. Had Oberlin not accepted me Early Decision, my other four schools also all used the common app, and there was only like one other supplement that I would have had a month to do. Small lists are good. Rob Cole, on the other hand, applied to something like 15 schools, including the UCs. And with Rob being Rob, he waited until the last minute to do them. Brilliant.

Ohohohohoho. Law department? What law department. Law is for squares, man.

Philosophy, like many of Oberlin's other departments, is not nationally reputable per se, but philosophy majors love the department. But I will remind you that Oberlin is a liberal arts school, so we don't have the oo-la-la our department is so shiny and our degree will make you set for life. However, Oberlin has a higher percentage of students going on to get their PhD or other highest degree in their field than any other liberal arts school in the nation, so... the Oberlin degree itself is reputable, but I wouldn't reccomend it as a jumping point if you're already thinking about graduate schools in the social sciences ( ... )

Stanford blows, because it's a school that's as big as Cal that you have to pay twice as much for. And to many people commit suicide at Harvard. And I couldn't get in.
