I know what you mean. I typically like oldies, but whenever I ride w/ Nic Gunning somewhere, usually to Battle Creek or something, we ALWAYS listen to oldies, and I find myself wanting to open the door and jump from the moving vehicle. With a long drive, you usally do hear the same song every 8 minutes.

The few and far between classical/jazz stations are the only guys who escape the trap.
Sure, having several hundred years of music from which to choose helps a touch.

And I don't believe I've even once heard Beethoven's Fifth over the radio.

Now, what are these "good songs" you speak so fondly of?

For a wider variety of Oldies, at least in the Saline/Ann Arbor area, try AM 1290 HONEY RADIO. http://www.honeyradio.com

It has the Oldies people expect, but it also has songs that required an archeology degree to unearth. Right now I hear Jim Lowe's GREEN DOOR from 1956. You'll never hear this gem on 104.3 out of Detroit.
