Doctor Who: am i doin it rite

People keep telling me how good the Eleventh Doctor is and how I will like him even if I strongly disliked Ten and how Moffat's skeevy misogyny isn't even a little bit apparent in this new series and my interest was properly piqued so I did the logical thing and went out and instead re-watched all of the Seventh Doctor episodes because sorry RTD, ( Read more... )

My biggest problem with Doctor Who is that it's a really dumb show.

And see, this is where the love of the Eleventh Doctor comes in, I think. I myself started watching Doctor Who at Nine's season in hopes of getting some ADVENTURE, and while I liked it, I ended up a mite disappointed with it. Mainly because Nine was such a killjoy throughout a majority of it, which uncomfortably clashed with the wackiness that surrounded him. Rose's relationship drama made me uncomfortable too and, needless to say, I ended up not bothering with Ten's seasons (with the exception of the episode "Blink") because I heard it got worse on that front.

Meanwhile, Eleven succeeds where Nine failed in absolutely reveling in the stupidity of it all, because he's a nut himself. He threatens Daleks with a cookie, is horrified at the idea of his two companions living a domestic life, goes "WHO DA MAN?!" at a bunch of aliens threatening to destroy Earth...he's just a joy to watch. And when Amy abruptly starts flirting with him, his next priority immediately ( ... )

I ended up quitting about three episodes into Ten's first season because I could not stand him. And I've watched a few mid-Ten episodes now too, and I don't regret my decision because I still can't stand him. But I absolutely love Eleven.

I second the above comment in that a lot of what I love about Eleven is how he's absurd and revels in it. I think it makes him really endearing too that a lot of the jokes in Eleven's season are directed about Eleven itself, which goes a long way to getting rid of the sharp/mean/condescending-ness that I felt with Ten. And I love Eleven's fascination with humans, which feels a lot more kid in a candy store here and less I KNOW ALL I SEE ALL I AM THE ALL POWERFUL TIME LORD which was just zzzzz. Matt Smith is a great physical comedian, so that's a joy to watch, and he's actually really good when the script demands he make a sharp turn from goof to getting down to serious business and then back to goof again.

Oh, gosh, and the supporting cast. I'm not saying it clears up all the women issues that ( ... )

I feel like I probably won't, but Nick just got into it and Becca's working her way through the new stuff. (~-_-)~ If this is happening around me I might as well give it a try,

That is the most beautiful icon.
