In "Zen and the Art of Guitar" some of this is expressed in terms like: When you come to learn/study, you always put on the white belt, not the black belt.
In "Outliers" Gladwell presents a lot of research focusing not on ten years but on 10,000 hours as the quantifiable threshold of expertise in any skill. (I gather there are dancers in, frinstance, Unmataland who could definitely rack up that many hours in less than ten years.) But of course part of being an expert is being a lifelong learner (which also makes one a much better teacher).
