He was spoofed not once, but TWICE by Weird Al. That in itself argues a huge sociological influence.
I always thought he was a freak, but recognized that he probably had many reasons for his freakishness. And he was never a poseur ... never that. He was always genuine, no matter what weirdness overcame him. Tormented and tortured, struggling to overcome whatever demons tormented him - sadly falling into a figure of fun and parody. He could have been so much more than what he became.
