I.
There was a boy
who one day found
a stone.
Smooth and mottled
every color variation possible
brilliant.
Boy ran clumsily back to his family's house
his eyes on his prize
He slammed the door open so hard it bounced back like a windshield wiper
He drank in every room, looking furiously
The kitchen.
"Look, mom!" boy yelled proudly, thrusting his prize out like an offering
Mom stood at the sink washing dishes
She cast the required glance sideways
"That's nice, dear." she said, turning her eyes back to where her attention had never left
Then recognition and her eyes snapped back
"You tracked mud!"
Her forehead crinkled and her nails dug into palm skin
II.
There was a man
who one day found
rock bottom.
His brain fought a war against itself
Logic and Emotion
Thinking and Experiencing
I and Else
He'd held on as long as he could
His nails were tearing from the skin
as he gripped the wall of the pit
that led to madness or death
but he never looked down
he never looked down
never never never
never never never
he never ever ever ever ever ever
looked down
he looked up
and wondered what was outside the pit
if anything existed
and though he didn't know it
looking up is what saved him from falling.
But he'd held on as long as he could
so long he'd begun to wonder if falling wasn't better
but he was scared to fall
but too bitter to look up anymore
so he looked at his hands
and then his arms
and each shoulder in turn
then down to his chest
and crotch
and legs
and feet
And then he looked inside
purpose
emotion
thinking
And then he looked at the wall
but couldn't see it
All he could see was himself
purpose
emotion
thinking
he looked at the wall
but he couldn't
he looked
couldn't.
He cried laughter
He wanted to see the wall
but he couldn't
he blocked his own view
and suddenly he knew how to see the wall.
Fear hit him hard then, but he allowed himself to feel it
and then
Looked up once more into the sky above the pit
in case the fear was right
and this was the last time he'd see it.
And then, with a faith born from logic
he let go of his identity
and the hands that held him up
kept him out of the pit
vanished
As did the rest of him
But yet
he didn't fall
And something amazing happened then
he saw the wall
Smooth and mottled
every color variation possible
brilliant.
Then he floated out of the pit.
III.
There was a man
who one day found
love.
But he was dying.
He wanted a child
To pass on what he'd learned
about Emotion and Logic
Thinking and Experiencing
I and Else
His love became pregnant.
Man died.

She dried her hands and bent to a knee.
She looked.
