For anyone who's seen this story (about the Lakota Indians withdrawing from their treaties with the U.S. and becoming a totally sovereign nation) and is wondering how it will affect the Pretty Bird Woman House, comments at this post from DailyKos suggest that the move isn't necessarily legal, and that the media is misrepresenting the issue. As much as I support First Nations forming their own sovereign states, I don't want anything bad to happen to Pretty Bird Woman House, either. I'm also not sure how PBWH would work if the Lakota nation can become independent, seeing the current state of the First Nations. :|

I'm not sure how much of the shelter's funding and legitimacy comes from the U.S. government in general, but if this really is an attempt toward sovereignty, lots of people would be affected -- the legal complications surrounding law enforcement on the reservations would only get worse, and the U.S. may have to withdraw whatever assistance it's offering, like food stamps and welfare, not to mention issues with off-reservation travel for things like jobs and medical care.

Of course, those are things a new government would handle, but it's obviously the sort of thing you'd want to see addressed as soon as possible and afaik NOTHING has really been addressed yet. :/ But I'm several hours out of the loop, too.
