Some very good ideas in this one, I liked the eventual description of the suit. The drill sargeant business has been done a lot, but your take was still fresh and effective. I'm guessing you've read Forever War?

It looks as if we both created dystopian post-war futures, doesn't it?

When Darren and I did the final sequencing of THE LAST POST I was very keen for PHEIDIPPIDES to be the opening story because of its fantastic world-building, convincing character interactions and the sheer page-turning energy of the plot.

Yes, I first read THE FOREVER WAR in the 70s and come back to it from time to time. I've also read STARSHIP TROOPERS, to which it is meant to be a riposte. It's interesting to note that Joe Haldeman was a front-line soldier in a real war, while Robert Heinlein was a naval officer in peacetime. I think the difference shows.
